Rainbows

Yesterday around sunset His Holiness Karmapa visited the rooftop of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra monastery. A rainbow appeared in the sky. Photographer Naomi Schmidt captured these beautiful images of the moment.

(Update, May 23): Blog reader Karin posted a comment pointing out that it was, in fact, a double rainbow. A smaller rainbow can be seen to the right of the main one in the second photograph here.

It's a double rainbow even, there is a second shorter one to the right on the second photo.

We were down the mountain and saw the most brilliant double rainbow, full and complete, that I had seen in many years. A rare sight; a blessing.

The rainbows continued to appear along the road as I drove to Karme Ling (KTD's Three-Year Retreat Center) that same afternoon. And the next day, as His Holiness entered a tent to visit with devotees who had gathered to catch a glimpse of him during his visit to Karme Ling, another rainbow appeared in the sky overhead. At Karme Ling, His Holiness blessed the men's and women's retreat houses, among other things. Periods of rain were punctuated by sunlight -- each time His Holiness went outdoors!

There were TWO days of double rainbows in W'stock, Wednesday and Thursday. People working in shops along Mill Hill Road were asking each other, "Did you see the rainbows? They are because of Karmapa." One of the innkeepers at the place we were staying told us, "The same thing happened when the Dalai Lama was here." One of the people at our inn, who went to the blessing at Karme Ling, said she saw a rainbow that encircled the sun. We also heard that double rainbows followed HHK's motorcade from NYC to W'stock, but I did not personally see this and would love to hear from anyone who did!

Forgot to add: We even asked some people in W'stock if rainbows were frequent there; all answered NO.

Correction to my first post, above: The double rainbows in Woodstock were Tuesday & Wednesday, NOT Wednesday & Thursday; Karmapa was at Karme Ling on Thursday.

I saw rainbows during sunset at KTD on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Each time His Holiness Karmapa was on the roof of the shrine building.

I live in Woodstock, and have for many years.
They are not any more rare than a rainbow is, but in the same respect, the day this photo was taken, Wed, it was one of the most brilliant rainbow have ever seen.

The bottom one was so rich and vivid, as the other one was almost a glow of the first.

We all knew it was His Holiness, and yes, people were coming out of their stores, parking on the side of the road in wonderment.

I told my son on the second day of rainbows, that it would have been more of a phenomenon if His Holiness had come and we had not seen any rainbows.

I want to say something about the rainbow on Thursday....

I knew that His Holiness was leaving the area (physically) that afternoon, but not the exact time he was leaving. He had the visit to Karme Ling, and then he was headed to Raktrul. I did not know the times, but when I saw the Double rainbow positioned Right over Red Hook, I suspected that His Holiness was at Raktrul between 5 & 6.

At 5:30 the second double rainbow in two days filled the sky, and sat right over Bardor Tulku's center. By 5:45 it was still there and getting brighter.

Does anyone know what time HH may have been at Raktrul on Thursday?

One thing to note about these rainbows..... They were very rich in colors, and ENDURING....

Eh Mah Ho, what a beautiful Visit!

Thanks to all who made it happen.
We finally did it!!!!!!

I also live in woodstock; this was the most amazing rainbow I've ever seen -- and luckily I live in one of the best places to see rainbows here. Having H.H. here was like meeting the Dharma all over again for the first time. A large (1500pixels wide -- the original was twice that, but blogger doesn't allow large photo uploads) composite of the photos I took of double rainbow is viewable at dharm-0-blog(dot)blogspot(dot)com. --k.tashi

Just for the record, while I don't know about the alleged Tuesday rainbow, I can attest to the fact that there was indeed a rainbow last Thursday, while H.H. was away for the day.
